Cherry has been working hard on their newest switch, the Cherry MX Low Profile RGB. This switch has an unusually low height of just 11.9 mm, making it ideal for low profile keyboards and even notebook computers. Despite the low height, this switch retains the classic Cherry actuation and feel.
Cherry MX Low Profile RGB in Detail
The first variant to be released will be the Red version. Although the actuation characteristics are nearly the same, the travel has been reduced from 4.1 to 3.2 mm. Acutation force remains unchanged at 45 cN.
Of course, the dimensions of the new switch is different, being 35% shorter than regular Cherry MX switches. The overall dimensions of regular Cherry MX switches: 18.5 x 15.6 x 15.6 mm (H x W x D). Low Profile RGB dimensions: 11.9 x 15.0 x 15.0 mm (H x W x D).
The Cherry MX Low Profile RGB is optimised for RGB lighting. Its specially designed housing ensures a uniform illumination of the entire keycap.
Like all Cherry switches, the Low Profile RGB was designed and built in Germany, its ‘Made in Germany’ seal representing the best product quality and the highest manufacturing precision. The switch is rated for 50 m actuations, the same as the regular Cherry MX. Cherry estimates this switch should be available sometime in Q4 or Q1 2019.
